Some people use Physics for good… Some use it to design a roller coaster that will kill you by the end of the ride. Behold, the Euthanasia Coaster!
“Euthanasia Coaster” is a hypothetic euthanasia machine in the form of a roller coaster, engineered to humanely – with elegance and euphoria – take the life of a human being. Riding the coaster’s track, the rider is subjected to a series of intensive motion elements that induce various unique experiences: from euphoria to thrill, and from tunnel vision to loss of consciousness, and, eventually, death. Thanks to the marriage of the advanced cross-disciplinary research in space medicine, mechanical engineering, material technologies and, of course, gravity, the fatal journey is made pleasant, elegant and ritualistic. Celebrating the limits of the human body but also the liberation from the horizontal life, this ‘kinetic sculpture’ is in fact the ultimate roller coaster: John Allen, former president of the famed Philadelphia Toboggan Company, once sad that “the ultimate roller coaster is built when you send out twenty-four people and they all come back dead. This could be done, you know.”

James Clerk Maxwell: The Greatest Victorian Mathematical Physicists - Professor Raymond Floud
James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) was one of the most important mathematical physicists of all time, after only Newton and Einstein. Within a relatively short lifetime he made enormous contributions to science which this lecture will survey. Foremost among these was the formulation of the theory of electromagnetism with light, electricity and magnetism all shown to be manifestations of the electromagnetic field. He also made major contributions to the theory of colour vision and optics, the kinetic theory of gases and thermodynamics, and the understanding of the dynamics and stability of Saturn’s rings.
This talk was a part of the conference on ‘19th Century Mathematical Physics’, held jointly by Gresham College and the British Society of the History of Mathematics. The transcript and downloadable versions of all of the lectures are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/19th-century-mathematical-physics
Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. There is currently nearly 1,500 lectures free to access or download from the website.

So I assume you believe there’s no god.
Which means you probably believe in evolution.
So then how do you justify your actions?
Explain to me how it is scientifically and evolutionary permissible to be homosexual or transgender.
I honestly want to know.
Dear OP,
I do believe you’ve already gotten the hint from my good friends here that your behavior with this post was unacceptable. However, I thought it might be helpful for you to understand why this thought process of yours is actually counterintuitive. Maybe you’ll learn something, and the next time someone brings up your point, you can actually be helpful to the world at large and teach them the same thing I’m about to teach you:
Sexual behavior in all forms, including homosexuality, being transgender, even polyamory, is genetic. It’s natural, in the sense of “being in nature”. It is not a solely human trait. It is not Satan’s plot to spread evil in a big sinner sandwich. The fact that people have not caught onto this yet means that we’re thousands of years behind every other species on the planet, congratulations.
Did you know that homosexuality is at least 50% directly attributed to DNA? If this country wasn’t so trigger happy it’d probably be even more. Did you also know, that in cases where a female is closely related to an openly homosexual male, her rate of reproduction is dramatically increased? There’s your “permissible”. I’d like to know why it’s permissible to act in such a foolish manner as yours. At least we’re helping the survival of our species.
You’ve probably been told that the closest animal to humans in terms of genetics is the chimpanzee, and while that’s true, there’s another animal that is just as close, if not slightly closer, than they are. They’re called the bonobo, and they don’t often keep them in zoos for one very simple reason: they really like their sexytimes, and zookeepers don’t want all the little kids asking why the monkeys are wrestling and moaning like that. Another fun fact: the entire species is bisexual. Pretty cool right? You know that community of naked poly hippies your mom saw on that camping trip once? That’s basically the bonobo.
In reality, a whole bunch of species have sexual traits that are often attributed only to the sins of humanity. Giraffes have one of the highest rates of homosexuality and bisexuality. Black swans, which are well known for being caring partners who mate for life, have a male homosexuality rate of 25%. And that’s not just banging, they raise kids together with the help of surrogate mothers who leave after the eggs are layed, and their children have a higher survival rate than hetero swan couples. What about transgender, you ask? Obviously that can’t be natural, it requires a much higher form of thinking than—oh, wait. Lions, king of the jungle? Try queen of the jungle. Many lionesses have been observed in the wild as having their own pride, mating only with other females, and chasing away males that try to come into their territory. The extra surge of testosterone from being all awesome and butch and pridelord-y even makes some of them grow manes. Hello drag kings.
The coolest part? The other animals are fine with it. How can some wild creature even understand the concept of “unnatural”? Nothing about animals is unnatural, and, lo and behold, we’re animals, just like everything else.
That is why it’s scientifically permissible. Because it’s in every corner of the world, in every kingdom and species and subspecies, every niche, and every culture. It’s permissible because it’s real. And, I’m sorry OP, but do you know how small of a percentage the members of your religion are, out of all the creatures in the world? I think evolution has stacked the odds against you.
-Sincerely,
The Product of Millions of Years of Successful Evolution

How Mysterious Molecules May Help Cool the Planet
Elusive molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere may be helping to cool the planet more efficiently than scientists previously thought, a new study suggests.
They are called Criegee intermediates, or Criegee biradicals (named after the German chemist Rudolf Criegee), and are short-lived molecules that form in the Earth’s atmosphere when ozone reacts with alkenes (a family of organic compounds). While scientists have known about the intermediates for decades, they haven’t been able to directly measure how the molecules react with other atmospheric compounds, such as the pollutants nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide, until now.
Researchers used a new method to create Criegee intermediates in the lab, and then reacted them with several atmospheric compounds. They found that the reactions with the pollutants could produce aerosols, tiny particles that reflect solar radiation back into space, much more quickly than previously assumed.

It turns out that exploding bubbles of hydrogen filmed at 16,000 frames per second are one of the coolest things on Earth.
This is part of a study of the fluid dynamics of various explosive mixtures of hydrogen and air. The video talks a lot about the idea of “buoyancy”, which for flames and explosions relates to their ability to push out and displace the air around them, use up all the available fuel, etc.
Of course, if you’re not into the science side of it, just skip ahead in the video to about 1:20 and then pick your jaw up off the floor.
As per PhysicsPhysics recommendation, immediately stop what you are doing, and watch this video in 1080p in full screen. We promise you will have no regrets!
Space Science Stamps Launched by Royal Mail
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Britain’s first contribution to space exploration.
On 26 April 1962, its first satellite, Ariel 1, was launched by NASA, carrying experiments designed by British universities and making Britain the world’s third spacefaring nation, after Russia and America. Royal Mail is celebrating with a set of six commemorative stamps, which went on sale the 16th of October, featuring images from European Space Agency missions.

It’s Official! Water Ice Discovered on Mercury
It’s time to add Mercury to the list of worlds where you can go ice-skating. Confirming decades of suspicion, a NASA spacecraft has spotted vast deposits of water ice on the planet closest to the sun.
Temperatures on Mercury can reach 800 degrees Fahrenheit (427 degrees Celsius), but around the north pole, in areas permanently shielded from the sun’s heat, NASA’s Messenger spacecraft found a mix of frozen water and possible organic materials.
Evidence of big pockets of ice is visible from a latitude of 85 degrees north up to the pole, with smaller deposits scattered as far away as 65 degrees north.
The find is so enticing that NASA will direct Messenger’s observation toward that area in the coming months — when the angle of the sun allows — to get a better look, said Gregory Neumann, a Messenger instrument scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. [Latest Mercury Photos from Messenger]
“There is an ongoing campaign, when the spacecraft permits, to look further northward,” said Neumann, the lead author of one of three Mercury studies published online in the Nov. 29 edition of the journal Science.
Researchers also believe the south pole has ice, but Messenger’s orbit has not allowed them to obtain extensive measurements of that region yet.
Messenger will spiral closer to the planet in 2014 and 2015 as it runs out of fuel and is perturbed by the sun’s and Mercury’s gravity. This will let researchers peer closer at the water ice as they figure out how much is there.

Fact Check: What a 9,000-Year-Old Earth Really Looked Like
U.S. House Rep. Paul Broun, a Georgia Republican, doesn’t believe in evolution, the Big Bang theory, or the teachings of embryology. In fact, in a Sept. 27 talk at LibertyBaptist Church in Hartwell, Ga., the member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, who is also a medical doctor, called those areas of science “lies straight from the pit of hell.”

But Broun also advanced his own theory of life on Earth.
“You see, there are a lot of scientific data that I’ve found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth,” he said. “I don’t believe that the Earth’s but about 9,000 years old. I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That’s what the Bible says.”
Broun’s creationist viewpoint stands in opposition to what scientific research reveals about the age of the planet. In fact, Earth formed 4.54 billion years ago — and humanity is rather lucky not to be seeing the planet on its 9,000th birthday. Earth was formed by the colliding and coming together of massive space objects called planetesimals, said Richard Carlson, a geochemist at the Carnegie Institution who has studied some of Earth’s oldest rocks. The force of the impacts would have melted rock, leaving Earth molten for hundreds of thousands of years, Carlson told LiveScience.
“Nine thousand years after the last giant impact — there likely were several big impacts during the growth of the planet — the surface of Earth, to a considerable depth, likely was molten rock,” he said.
Creationist beliefs
Broun is far from the only believer in a literal, or Biblical, creation. According to a Gallup poll conducted in June, 46 percent of Americans believe God created humans in their present form within the last 10,000 years, a creationist belief. Only 15 percent said they believed in evolution without God’s hand, while 32 percent said they believed in evolution guided by God.
That survey did not ask adults how old they believed Earth to be, but estimates based on literal interpretation of the Bible normally range from 6,000 to 8,000 years. (It’s not clear why Broun believes in a 9,000-year-old Earth.)
The most popular 6,000-year-old figure comes from James Ussher, a 16th-century Irish clergyman. Ussher, whose position as Archbishop of Armagh made him head of the church in Ireland, published two works in the 1650s using genealogies from the Bible to date the creation of the world to Oct. 23, 4004 B.C.
Other estimates differ based on the use of different Bible translations and whether biblical scholars take the Bible’s six-day creation period literally or assume the “days” to be longer periods of time.
What the science says
Scientists, on the other hand, have reached a surprisingly precise answer as to the age when Earth and the rest of the solar system began to solidify: between 4.567 and 4.568 billion years — the equivalent of knowing a person’s birthday within two days, Carlson said.
This age range is calculated using isotopes, or variants of chemical elements. For the purposes of dating the solar system, researchers use lead and uranium isotopes. They measure the ratios of different types of isotopes from Earth and from meteorites. Because these objects all formed from the same pool of cosmic dust and gas during the birth of the solar system, the measurements enable researchers to determine how long ago the objects separated from that common pool.
As it turns out, these numbers mesh quite nicely with the ages of the oldest rocks known on Earth, which would have formed after the planet stabilized and cooled. The best estimate for the age of the oldest rocks on Earth, found near Hudson Bay in Quebec, is 4.4 billion years, according to Carlson. (The date is somewhat controversial, with some scientists believing 3.8 billion years is a closer date for those rocks.) Meanwhile, the oldest mineral grains found on Earth, zircons from Western Australia, date back 4.36 billion years.
The cooling and solidifying of the planet likely happened quickly on a geologic time scale, on the order of hundreds of thousands to a million years, Carlson said. But Adam and Eve wouldn’t have found Earth hospitable for a very long time. Even at 2.5 billion years of age, the planet had a flip-flopping atmosphere that periodically looked like something you’d see on one of Saturn’s moons today.
The first evidence for life on Earth may be Australian stromatolites, fossilized bacterial mats that date back 3.5 billion years. More certain fossils peg life’s arrival to 2.7 billion years ago. Modern humans, by contrast, didn’t show up until 200,000 years ago.

Hadron Collider
The Large Hadron Collider is the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator. It was built by theEuropean Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) from 1998 to 2008, with the aim of allowing physicists to test the predictions of different theories of particle physics and high-energy physics, and particularly that of the existence of the hypothesized Higgs boson and of the large family of new particles predicted by supersymmetric theories.
